When Samsung released the D900, it seemed they had finally struck gold in merging a solid slim-slider phone with a good-quality camera. Though it had a few initial critics for the lack of some relatively minor features, many buyers were not deterred in any way and punters showed clearly what they thought by buying this phone in droves.
Now we see the D900i, which from the outset may look like a simple re-branding, but after a closer inspection, you’ll see that it’s a worthwhile successor to what for a while was Samsung’s flagship model as it corrects some of the minor issues seen with the original D900 and adds some extra features to try and make it a more appealing proposition.
Though the physical size itself hasn’t changed, there have been a few minor design amendments. Still being only 12.9mm thick, the D900i is compact enough to please most. The responsiveness and usability of the keypad also helps keep a friendly feel to the D900i
One of the main gripes that some in the industry had about the original D900 was in the materials used, which some felt were too susceptible to fingerprints and were not of a high-enough quality. With the D900i, there is a clear difference in the materials used. Though it is still shiny and a little susceptible to fingerprints, the quality of the materials used appears to have been upgraded.
One thing that did seem conspicuous by its absence in the original D900 was that of an FM radio. On a handset that was meant to qualify as a mobile, portable camera and music player this seemed unusual to have been omitted. Thankfully, Samsung have added this into the D900i, which goes some-way to making it a more complete package than before.
Still in place, is the superb display, which has always been a strength of Samsung’s phones; the screen in place on the D900i is one of their best. Legible under direct sunlight and with great detail at all times, many consumers may choose this handset just on seeing the display and it’s not hard to see why.
Though the camera module is still the same, the Mega Pixel count has been upgrade from a 3MP to 3.15MP. No immediate difference is evident but it appears that this is more likely to have been a software update, as there seems to be a marginal increase in speed when taking images. Saying that, a major increase in picture quality isn’t really necessary, as the original D900 was one of the best of the 3MP range, only excelled by some of Sony Ericssons Cyber-shot range.
With the D900i, Samsung have basically added one new feature (FM radio), tweaked the camera software and upgraded the materials used in construction. Due to the fact that very little has been added, it’s clear that Samsung haven’t really set-out to appeal to current D900 owners, as many just won’t see a reason to pay extra for so little more. Instead they’re obviously trying to widen the appeal of the D900, to those who considered the D900 to begin with, but held off because of some of the (now rectified) flaws. Still a great phone, just not necessarily an ideal upgrade for current D900 owners.
